During a gorgeous afternoon in NYC, there was a need to detour from our walk to lunch in order to pick up some spare strings to have on hand for the gig.
A quick duck into a very cool little shop for some strings … only to come out with a great Mandolin! It was spotted as Simon was walking out of the shop – a beautiful vintage early 60’s electric Mandolin, hanging on the wall. It had only arrived at the shop a few days earlier, even had its original case.
Kismet, fate, destiny you say? Well, Simon had not brought his old faithful one, so he’d be unable to play “Bed of Roses” – a fan favorite from Looking Out Looking In – later on at Joe’s. So of course a brief test-drive ensued and the lucky oldie but goodie had a new home and the new owner now had his elusive spare electric in his collection.
An early bit of magic that was to continue to linger on for the entire night. Joe’s Pub was a blistering set, full of favorites and new tunes in front of an appreciative, enthusiastic SOLD OUT crowd. NYC Simon gigs are magical – and this one has raised the bar for all others to be measured!
