I remember a few things about the Animal Soup, London Astoria gig...
The glittery, caberet style stars on the backdrop - the massive stage with very little backline filling it - the weak stage introduction given to the band - the closet we were packed in backstage that we were told was our dressing room - and a friend having a huge chunk bitten out of her leg by some crazy security guy's dog just as we were leaving at 2am.These memories do not overshadow how we felt on stage during the show....
Ben, my oldest son, had played many gigs with me but this was by far his biggest and most prestigious. Lindsay his young schoolfriend who knew my songs so well from hanging around at our house jammin' could be trusted to play all my main rhythm acoustic parts leaving me free to play electric. James Hayto playing fantastic wah-wah lead and Phil (Balders Spalders) Spalding, an animal of a bassist, underpinning what was to be one of this line ups last but finest gigs. I think the version of Way It Is, despite the dropped drum beat in the middle, is the best this song has ever been played live. The vocal just happened this way. It had never been rehearsed to be ferocious, we always played it quite laid back. On this occasion, this night, the electric atmosphere took the song down a whole new path and it found its true home. To this day I have never been able to reproduce it but I believe in my heart of hearts that one day I will.
There is more to this show than meets the ear...
I spent a few days dubbing and tweaking the sound of the recording, trying to perfect the imperfections - none of which I was able to do very successfully as 'live' is 'live' is 'live'. There is no hiding. I did however double the odd acoustic part, add a harmony voice in here and there that was too quiet in the original mix... and if I remember correctly, I even padded out the crowd to make it sound like there were more than fifty had stayed behind after the Who convention to see us. That night we were worthy of a stadium crowd. I really hope those of you that go to the trouble of downloading the entire show can close your eyes and relive the night with me in its glorious technicolor. When I listen it brings a tear to my eye - I am proud of the musicians I have around me and this night was no different even with the young blood and highness in the band. I live for the moment, a crescendo so big drags you in fearlessly and screams, "LISTEN"! This is the Animal Soup.
